My dog has been taking Heartgard well over a year, this medication is supposed to prevent a variety of parasites, including roundworm. While my dog was on Heartgard, he contracted roundworm. Heartgard failed to prevent this from happening.
In the company's defense, they are offering to pay for the treatments made by the vet in order to remove the roundworm from my dog. However, this shouldn't have happened in the first place.
I pray that whoever reads this, does more research into the various prevention medicines out there for their pets, before deciding on one that doesn't work. The last thing any pet owner would want, is for something bad to happen to their beloved animal(s).

We live in Louisiana and have a dog that lives outside. She has been on Heartguard for about 3 years without ever missing a dose. Our vet quit selling Heartguard and asked us to bring her in to be tested because it has not been working very well for outside dogs. She tested positive for heartworms...I'm quite upset because I thought I had protected her. Now she has to go through painful and expensive treatments that she may not even survive! I have heard of others who have had this problem as well. I hope that we see a class action law suit against the company that makes Heartguard for selling a product that claims to protect dogs but does not.
How did you contact them to pay for treatments? Our vet refuses to sell Heartguard anymore because he has been seeing so many of the outside dogs he treats get hearworms anyway. We live in Louisiana where the mosquitos are numerous, so we never missed a dose. Our dog has tested positive, and now has to have the treatments. I'm very upset because I thought she was protedted!
I've talked to some other people whose dogs got hearworms even though they were on Heartguard continuously. It is not reliable for preventing heartworms in dogs that live outside!
Our vet contacted the company about paying for treatment, I'm not sure how she (our vet) went about contacting them. The vet also stopped using Heartguard and switched to Sentinel.
